Kim Cogan's refined oil paintings capture contemporary life in all its beauty and absurdity. Using minimal brush strokes and a highly recognizable palette Kim's style speaks ease well beyond his years. Inspired by the works of artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, Edward Hopper, and Antonio Lopez Garcia, Kim strives towards developing a visual language of his own. As an artist, Kim attempts to balance the abstract with the representational. Within his large cityscapes the skyline is simplified and broken down into basic lines, color fields, and abstract shapes. The impressionistic backdrops of his figurative pieces invigorate the human subject. Kim paints directly from life occasionally using photographs when a single sitting will not suffice. His process is flexible, allowing his spontaneous nature and curious eye to guide his artistic direction. Kim lives and paints in San Francisco, California.
